Probably useful to post a reminder of where chemistry databases are available in the reference area, as we might be seeing an upswing of questions in the coming weeks...
Instructional handouts on the basics of both databases are available on the Twirly Norbert. The SciFinder Scholar handout explains how to find synthesis references within the database.
SciFinder Scholar is technically available from all machines. It's housed under the Locally Mounted Databases folder so may not be immediately visible. Searching works fine on all machines if that's all that's desired, but printing and saving are...complicated. In short, if anyone needs to print or save, the easiest solution is to log them on to the multimedia machine, where they can do both. It's in the Science and Technology folder. (The Dells allow printing, but not saving. The SunRays don't allow either printing or saving, as far as I know--although I'm convinced there's a convoluted solution.)
Beilstein/Gmelin is available only from the multimedia machine.
Yes, the client software for both databases can be downloaded to user's own computers. But the databases can only be accessed from on campus--by extension, downloading the software will only be useful if you have a computer on campus or are accessing the internet on campus with a laptop.

Thanks for the reminders. I'm trying to enjoy the relatively quiet evenings while they last...:)
